  “Land ahoy!” shouts Nicholas Young. Learn about Aotearoa New Zealand’s history from the time of Captain Cook’s arrival in 1769 through until Māori invite missionary settlers to come and live alongside them in 1814.
• The tale of Te Pahi the Adventurer
  When Chief Te Pahi travels to Australia in 1805 he meets Governor Phillip King and the Reverend Samuel Marsden. This opens the way for new friendships and also for trade. Te Pahi is impressed with all the things he learns, but one day he hears something he thinks is very wrong. He must speak up.
• The tale of Ruatara and the New Beginning
  Ruatara loves adventure. The young man from the chiefly line of Ngāpuhi can’t wait to sail for England to meet the King. It’s an adventure that will nearly cost him his life, and will bring about enormous changes in his country.
• The tale of Patuone the Peacemaker
  A Wesleyan mission station in Northland has been raided, causing the missionaries to flee for their lives. A Māori war party is moving through the bush towards them, bringing a new danger. Chief Patuone has a decision to make – follow the tradition of his people and take the lives of the missionaries or follow the new message that is coming to his homeland.
• The tale of Elizabeth Colenso the Teacher
  Six year old Elizabeth screams as her young Māori friend is taken from the classroom by an enemy warrior. She soon learns that she will never see him again. This frightening moment causes Elizabeth to want to be a missionary like her parents and spread the message of forgiveness and peace. It will be a life of hardship, sacrifice and challenging adventures.

This series of children’s books follows the events that took place from the time of the slave trade through to the week leading up to the signing of the Treaty. It then skips through time describing what happened over the following decades.

The stories outline the immense disappointment experienced by Māori as the high ideals of the Treaty were ignored. They then go on to describe the land march led by Dame Whina Cooper which helped bring the disregard for New Zealand’s founding document to the nation’s attention and conscience.

The stories conclude with a look at how the treaty injustices have been addressed in recent years as New Zealand works to right the wrongs of the past.

The third release in a series of 15 NZ stories – sold in a set of 5. Series One was released in 2014, Series Two in 2015 and are also available on this website.
